Class Experience

By the end of the course, students will:
*define polymer
*describe cross-linking and how it relates to slime
*give examples and properties of non-Newtonian fluids
*describe the purpose of each component of a basic slime recipe
*follow instructions for how to make slime
*make observations about the slime-making process
Lots of students have made slime before, but do they really know the science behind it? There's a lot of great chemistry concepts to be explored with slime! I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with 6.5 years of experience in the classroom. I have also taught freshman college chemistry. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest and motivation- from high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
No homework is assigned, but students will probably want to make other slimes from the book!
A handout of supplies will be provided 1 week before class starts, but includes Elmer's white glue and borax powder or contact solution. Cost of enrollment also includes a pdf copy of my The Twelve Slimes of Christmas book, featuring instructions for how to make 12 different holiday slimes!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Some students may need assistance with making the slime.
