This two-part class explores the truth behind the Trojan War. Did it really happen? What do we actually know? The lesson will be told like a story in style and accompanied by images from the excavations at Troy. Ample time will be given for questions during the class and after. This class is taught in English.
Students will learn some core elements of history and archaeology in one of the most important stories in the Mediterranean world. This background will allow the students to understand and analyze the narrative based on historical sources and archaeological evidence. Some knowledge of the Trojan War myth is useful, but not required.
My education and training as a classical archaeologist, in addition to 16 years of teaching Latin, Greek, and the Classics at both the secondary and college level prepare me for the detailed exploration of ass aspects of the ancient world.
There will be no homework for this class.
Assessment requirements for families can be provided upon request.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Sources will come from the ancient Homeric Poets, Herodotus, Greek, Roman, and Hittite texts. Archaeological journals of the excavations at Troy are also used.
