Class Experience

In this multiday class students will enjoy building upon reading and comprehension skills through a variety of comprehension activities including inference, information retrieval through quizlets and fact and opinion.

Students will also communicate meaning in different ways through writing a variety of non fiction pieces including a poster, non chronological report and a balanced argument.

ACTIVITIES WILL BE SET AND STARTED IN CLASS FOR STUDENTS TO COMPLETE AFTER CLASS AND SUBMITTED FOR MARKING

Class 1: Sep 1st - COMPREHENSION
We will read through a slide of information about The Titanic together. Students can either take it in turns to read aloud or read along with me. We will talk about the key points and discuss what inference means. We will learn about why inference is such an important part of reading comprehension. Inference task will be set and started in class.

Class 2: Sep 7th - NON FICTION WRITING (Poster)
We will begin by revising what we have learnt about The Titanic so far, and learn how to make notes to refer to later. We will use these notes to complete a poster which will be started in class.

Class 3: Sep 14th - COMPREHENSION
We will read a non chronological report all about The Titanic, and then begin a quizlet on what we have read using information retrieval skills. The quiz will be completed using full sentences and we will talk about the importance of this. The quizlet will need to be completed after class and submitted.

Class 4: Sep 21st - NON FICTION WRITING (non chronological report)
We will revise the features of the non chronological report read in the previous class and make a list of features needed. This will form a tick list of what students will need to include in their own non chronological reports which will be started in class and marked upon submission.

Class 5: Sep 27th - COMPREHENSION
We will discuss fact and opinion and look at a powerpoint to help students understand the difference. Students will then be asked to look at some examples of writing about The Titanic and discuss if they think it is fact or opinion, backing up their ideas with reasons.
The follow up activity will be reading a newspaper article about The Titanic and creating a table of facts and opinions from the text.

Class 6: 1st Oct - NON FICTION WRITING (Balanced argument)
We will talk about what a balanced argument is in terms of a non fiction example of writing. Students will then be given the title:

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am so excited to introduce myself as an Outschool teacher. My name is Kelly and I live on the Jurassic Coast in Devon, England, UK.
I have been inspiring students as a teacher for almost 25 years, both in school and online. My online classes are as creative and interactive as my face to face lessons, with my ethos being all about lighting the spark and developing a love for learning. I believe that learning happens best when there is engagement and enjoyment, and my classes follow this principle. Lessons are taught using fun and interactive resources. For younger learners this includes physical resources, (puppets, pictures, objects), songs, music and movements. For older students I ensure classes are visual and include full colour slides, interactive games and activities to ensure learners are engaged at all times.
In group classes, all learners are valued and given individual time to engage and respond - and I pride myself on finishing a session with each student feeling they have achieved !
1-1 classes are bespoke and carefully planned to ensure the needs of individuals are met in an inspiring way.
So come and join the hundreds of students I have made a difference to and sign up for a class that suits your needs.
See you there!!
