Join along as we adventure through history to explore the thirteen original colonies in the United States. British colonizers traveled across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe and founded colonies. Learn why the colonizers left their home countries, why they chose to settle in certain areas, and what their life was like in the colonies. We will also explore how colonization affected Indigenous peoples. Multiple viewpoints will be used throughout the course. Each week you will receive a pre-recorded video, a homework assignment, a game and an activity. Course Outline: Week One: Introduction to the Colonies -Video: Learn about the three distinct regions of the colonies and what makes them alike and different -Assignment: Mapping the Colonies -Kahoot! Quiz Week Two: The New England Colonies (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) Video: Explore the founding of these colonies along with aspects of their government Assignment: Research Project - Founders -Mystery Puzzle Week Three: The Middle Colonies (Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and New Jersey) -Video: Explore why colonizers chose to settle in these colonies and the impact on Indigenous populations Assignment: Create a Pamphlet -Gimkit Game Week Four: The Southern Colonies (Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia) -Video: Learn about the origins of the colonies and the reliance on agriculture -Assignment: The Importance of Tobacco in the Colonies -Kahoot! Parental Guidance
Throughout the course, sensitive subjects will be addressed such as the treatment of Indigenous peoples, the enslavement of Africans, and the number of deaths that occurred in the colonies.
During the course, we will use various third-party tools such as Nearpod, Kahoot, and Gimket. These resources do not require an account.
