Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
During the next six weeks, we will discover how a mouse, princess, some soup, and a spool of thread are connected. Learners will read and discuss "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo. This chapter book will help learners explore deep and meaningful themes and take away valuable life lessons.
The first half of the class will be a read aloud, and in the second half of the class we will discuss the chapters. Learners will talk about visualization, theme, and connections that they make to the story. Learners are encouraged to think deeply. This story will build learners vocabulary and world view. Themes such as love and loss will be explored and learners will be encouraged to share any connections that they have to the text. Learners will compare and contrast characters and discover how they have light and dark inside them.
I will do an engaging read aloud with dramatic voices, and lead a discussion. Learners will be encouraged to ask and answer questions. This book has deep themes and does contain the death of a child's mother, mild violence, and child abuse.
I provide optional projects for enrichment. They are not required in the class.
