Description
Class Experience
We focus on emergent design where students co-construct meaning with instructors in a collaborative environment. Our philosophy is to engage every problem through a 7-generations lens where we consider the long-term implications of the decisions we make today. Course progress is learner-directed, where current advances in science, technology and anything that affects our entire planet are integrated into Minecraft builds. Our "D20 Learner Principles" are applied consistently throughout the...
- initiate the project with empathy, where students take care of a Minecraft animal to start - design redstone circuitry to demonstrate powering the vehicle with renewable energy - create food, water and air systems to sustain life - design interiors using color theory - design governance, justice and education systems to build collaborative decision making - create artistic venues to experience storytelling, music, and dance Minecraft will be the medium through which we build, re-engineer and connect with our community. Screenshots of student work will be taken by instructors and seen on the Padlet so our community can be inspired by each other’s builds.
There is no homework and learners will have the option to work individually or collaboratively, although working with others in the community is encouraged.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
An optional assessment certificate is available, but not required for those who just want to play. Our unique assessment process gives learners the opportunity to self-evaluate according to a set criteria for each build, and provide both screenshot and literary evidence to support their thesis.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
If students and parents request a course certificate, we will be using Google Forms to implement the self-assessment process. No Google Account will be required and no student information will be stored in doing this. Padlet will be used to map Earth locations and provide instructional sequence. Minecraft is used and learners are expected to have their own accounts. If there are barriers to this, we can provide an account.
