Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Did you know that the Sun is the closest star that we can explore today? Did you know that we have flown a spacecraft into the Sun's corona and that the spacecraft actually survived the encounter? The Sun is the most important celestial body in our Solar System. Without it, life on Earth would not be possible. In this class you will learn about the structure of the Sun, auroras, solar activity, as well as how the Parker Solar Probe "touched the Sun" and lived to tell the tale. I will begin with a warmup, before moving into a tour of the Sun. Students will be given the opportunity to share ideas for a space mission to the Sun. Perhaps they might want to try touching the Sun like the Parker Solar Probe or going even deeper.

During the class, students will be able to ask questions and share insights. Participation is welcome and encouraged as it makes classes more interesting.

I will be using a Google Slides presentation in my discussion of the Sun. The presentation will include NASA photos of the Sun, which will help enhance the quality of the teaching.

As a reminder to learners taking this class, never look directly at the Sun. Doing so will damage your eyes. A safer thing to do is to look at photos of the Sun taken by NASA online.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:

Discuss the structure and composition of the Sun
Discuss auroras and how they occur on Earth
Discuss solar activity, such as solar flares, sunspots and coronal mass ejections
Discuss Solar and Lunar Eclipses and how they occur
learning goal
