The Stories Behind Disney Movie Fairy Tales - Summer Camp! 6-9

I have two listings for this class. This one is for students aged 6-9. The other is for students aged 3-5. Do you love princesses? Me too! Did people in the past like princesses, too? YES! Classic tellings of fairy tales are strikingly similar to those told today. They both feature unfortunate circumstances, heroism, a good portion of magic, and, of course, a wedding at the end! Some of the differences might surprise you! Many classic fairy tales, though a little different than modern stories, are accessible to all children of all ages, and adults may find themselves enjoying them just as much! This class includes about 10-15 minutes of reading. The reading is at an advanced level, similar or a little more advanced than "Charlotte's Web." Also expect some fun old-timey language, such as, "thither, amiss, roved." Studies have shown that children are able to gain much more by listening to a story. Their “listening level” greatly surpasses their reading level until about age 14. When we read aloud to kids, we engage them in a text that they might not or cannot read. Throughout the reading of the story, I will ask comprehension questions to encourage students to talk about the events of the story. I hope to allow everyone time to share if they want to! Time permitting, we will also talk about the elements the learners like from either the story or the movie! Participants can feel free to color a related coloring page during the story and share it at the end of class if they wish to! In this storytime class, we will read one of the tellings of Beauty and the Beast (class 1), Sleeping Beauty (class 2), and The Princess and the Frog (class 3). Each story is engaging and fun! I look forward to sharing them with you!
Learning Goals
Students will practice identifying characters, sequencing events, comparing and contrasting, and sharing their ideas. Students will also practice respecting others and taking turns to share.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
In Beauty and the Beast, the Beast in the story nearly dies when Beauty does not come home as planned. The story briefly describes his pain before she saves him. The description is much less intense than the Disney movie is. Also, there is no antagonist nor fighting in the story, as there is in the Disney movie.
In Sleeping Beauty, the story briefly mentions that the cook is planning on boxing the kitchen boy on the ear. Also, there are many princes who try to save the princess from her slumber and get caught and die in the thicket around the kingdom. There is no dragon or fighting, as there is in the movie!

**1) Classes Taught:**
I specialize in teaching courses that focus on introducing literature, critical thinking, and history to young learners. My repertoire includes classes on reading, mythology, literature, and logic, offering students a diverse array of subjects to explore and engage with.
**2) Professional Background:**
With a background in humanities (literature, history, and Great Books), I bring a multidisciplinary perspective to my teaching practice. I strongly believe in continuing my education post-graduation, so I have continued to push myself to explore philosophy, ancient mythologies, literary traditions, and cultural beliefs from around the world.
**3) Teaching Philosophy:**
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies a deep belief in the transformative power of education. I see teaching not merely as a transmission of facts, but as a way to life. My goal is to create dynamic learning environments where students feel empowered to question, critique, and engage critically with course material, fostering intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. I employ questions, movement, visuals, songs, and physical at-home items to make lessons engaging and memorable!
I believe in the importance of cultivating critical thinking in the classroom, encouraging students to approach texts and topics with an open mind and a spirit of inquiry. Through thoughtful analysis, much dialogue, and collaborative inquiry, we can navigate the complexities of human experience and broaden our understanding of the world around us.
**4) Fun and Personal:**
When I'm not in the classroom, you can often find me spending time with my family. My husband, two sons, and I love to explore the great outdoors (we are located in the Sonoran desert!), cook, read, and talk together! I have a passion for community, and love taking trips to visit my parents and friends.
Making learners feel heard and welcome is one of my top priorities! My classes are very learner-centered. I differentiate every lesson to make it as suitable as possible to your learner’s particular needs, learning styles, and interests.

That's a glimpse into who I am as a teacher, scholar, and individual. I look forward to embarking on this educational journey with you and exploring the wonders of literature, culture, and history together!
