US Grade 7 - 10
This class looks at Soviet spy Gerhart Eisler, his life in espionage, the prominent spies he was in contact with, his role in creating the paranoia of the early Cold War, his daring escapes and near misses, and what his activities can tell us about espionage. This class is lecture-discussion based with an accompanying powerpoint. Slide images include photographs of people involved in the story, maps, newspaper articles, and statistics. Prior knowledge of the Cold War is not necessary for this class, and students are encouraged to ask questions at any time during the lecture. (**Students are required to have their camera on for the duration of class. Class sections are recorded for student safety and participation. Students who are not on camera will be dropped from the class without a refund.**)
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this class, students will have examined the early Cold War years and prominent events within it. They will have examined the Comintern of the Soviet Union, the secret underground activities of the Communist Party of the United States, front groups and fake businesses used by Soviet spies, the cooperation and alliance maintained by the United Kingdom and the United States, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They will see how Gerhart Eisler fits into these events and organizations, his role in espionage, and how he managed to slip away.
