Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Students will learn through a colorful and engaging slideshow how to identify various types of bettas, both wild and domesticated varieties of the genus Betta. We will look into the genetics of breeding for certain traits and how bettas breed when they are known to be very aggressive fish (and why this feature is not as accurate as it once was). Information about basic betta care and requirements will be provided and live betta fish will be shown to participating students to introduce them to some bettas you can't find in the pet stores! I will share my experience as a betta breeder and if I can, images of my local betta-only shop in North Carolina.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the characteristics of commonly bred bettas in captivity, their natural habitat and how they are bred. How to take good care of a pet betta with minimal expense and best practices with a focus on maintaining healthy and happy fish. We will learn common mistakes people make and myths about keeping bettas that people often share.
