Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner Level
Studies show the importance of phonics for young readers, which is the focus of this 7-week course. Using the science of reading and my background in Orton-Gillingham I will help your child become more confident readers and help them understand how our language works. We will work on skills that will help them in all areas of study. Reading is a part of our daily lives, and all children should have the foundations they need to be proficient readers.

In this class, we will review all consonants and vowels, the main digraphs, beginning and ending blends, 2 syllable types, and spelling generalizations. We will introduce and learn spelling generalizations (rules), Compound words, VC.CV word division. Students will receive a new word list every other week with the words we will learn and use. These word lists will be used for work and games outside of class. Activities will include a game and or a worksheet.

*Students do need to know the basic sounds of consonants and vowels. This class is only 6 weeks and will move at a moderate pace. If your child needs more explicit instruction, please reach out, and we can discuss options*

This course is for you if:
-your child is a beginning reader
-your child is struggling with reading or spelling
-your child needs a new way to break down words for understanding
-your child is reading below a second-grade level

Students need a notebook/folder and writing paper for class. They will also need to be able to print worksheets. I try to limit the number of pages to print and only send the ones I feel necessary. I will also provide a PDF of my writing sheet. This can be printed off and laminated or put in a sheet protector and used with dry-erase markers instead of writing paper.
Learning Goals
Using skills in this class, students will be able to read and write words that have short vowels and understand the unique spelling rules.
