Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music from Mount Vernon Nazarene University
As a huge Julie Andrews fan, I have have watched this film and sung it's songs more times than I can count. As a music teacher, I have also taught this course over 25 times in the Florida public school system grades 2nd-6th. The questions, topics, and time spent on each part varies with age and time allotted. We also introduce basic solfege singing which is something I have taught many students in sight singing classes.
In regards to mature themes, we do not spend time discussing the romance of Maria and the Captain, but focus rather on the children and their relationships with each other, Maria, and their father. In regards to the film being set in the midst of World War 2 and the family's need to escape from the Nazi's, we do not spend too much time discussing the war, but will acknowledge various historical truths told in the story.
