Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. In this 4 week FLEX class students we will examine the 'Six' through a modern lens to avoid the age old stereotypes that these brave women have endured.

US Grade 5 - 8
7 lessons//4 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Henry VIII Overview
This class is our introduction to the man himself, Henry VIII
Lesson 2
Divorced- Catherine of Aragon
We will wrap up week one by learning about Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon. 24 years of marriage to Henry, and for what?
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Beheaded- Anne Boleyn
Anne number 1 is going to need a whole week to herself! Phew!
 Week 3
Lesson 4
Died- Jane Seymour
In the first lesson this week we will focus on Jane Seymour. Boring and meek or just playing the part of the dutiful wife...
Lesson 5
Divorced- Anne of Cleves
Was Anne of Cleves really so 'ugly' or did henry just use that as an excuse to put her aside? You decide.
 Week 4
Lesson 6
Catherine Howard
The one with the 'bad' reputation. Was Catherine so badly behaved? Or was she just a child who never had anyone looking out for her?
Lesson 7
Katherine Parr
The last and arguably the luckiest wife?
This class is taught in English.
Students should come out of this course with a very good general and diverse knowledge of the 6 wives of King Henry VIII of England. From here they can pursue their own specific interests and research in areas that they have found to be of particular interest.
Homework Offered
There will not be any specific homework but students should participate in the quizzes and games provided to them in each lesson (they are fun and not assessed) and are also required to add to the classroom discussion each week on the Outschool platform. The more the students participate the more they will get out of their learning experience.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Grades Offered
Students won't need to purchase anything specific for our class but they may wish to take notes.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
** Please read these notes carefully **
- We will discuss religion (specifically Christianity) in a secular manner as our events happened during the time of the Reformation and because at this time Henry VIII was in conflict with the Pope. There will be some discussion about why people across Europe were becoming increasingly unhappy with the Pope and the Catholic Church of the day- this will be done in a factual manner.
- There will be discussion about execution as two of Henry's wives were beheaded. There will also be some discussion on the style of the execution of Anne Boleyn. No gory details or anything that should scare the learners.
- Students should also already know about marriage, what 'consummation of marriage' entails, pregnancy and how it happens and what is meant by an 'an affair' as these concepts are central to Henry’s 6 marriages. They will be dealt with in a respectful way using age appropriate language at all times.
- In respect to the reputation of Catherine Howard, Henry's 4th wife, the long standing dialogue concerning Catherine is that she was a 'flirt' and behaved badly with men. I will examine her age when this so called 'bad behaviour' began and touch briefly on how she was perhaps mistreated by adults who were meant to care for her. In the last 10 years the dialogue about Catherine Howard has changed dramatically as historians begin to readjust their views on the very young Catherine in light of modern thought about consent and it is very important for us to also recognise that as a very small child she could not have possibly been guilty of the things she was accused of. Again, this is will be done in a very sensitive and age appropriate way but learners should be mature enough to understand what is meant by the examination of her bad behaviour vs adults mistreating a child.
- As a guide to the content- both my 9 year old and 10 year olds have done this class and both enjoyed it very much.
We will use Nearpod as our class delivery method. In the Nearpod presentation I will use some brief YouTube videos for learning enrichment but they will be embedded in the Nearpod platform so free from advertising and follow up video suggestions.
