CLASS SUMMARY In this 8 session course, meeting once per week, writers will immerse themselves in the art of poetry writing. We'll learn to write from stream of consciousness, practice structuring poems with stanzas, learn the importance of word choice, and incorporate literary devices like similes and metaphors, imagery, anaphoras, connotation and denotation of words, and more to master self-expression. Like my 8 session novel class, this is one of my favorite skill building courses and is especially fun in a small group setting. Anyone is welcome, but this course is recommended for girls. CLASS STRUCTURE ✔️ Opening featured poet (volunteer only) and/or 5 minute “break the ice” activity ✔️ Short creative writing starter designed to engage your thinking ✔️ Instruction and demonstration with examples ✔️ Skill practice and poetry “deep-dive” ✔️ Voluntary share out ✔️ (Homework) Revise, edit and finish the poem on your own MY TEACHING STYLE ✔ I’m friendly and prioritize a safe, enjoyable space ✔ It’s important to me to give you a quality, fun, 5-STAR experience every time REQUIRED EXPERIENCE If you aren't sure about your poetry skills, BUT YOU DO CONSIDER YOURSELF AN ACTIVE WRITER, I urge you to try this class. Poetry isn't like other types of writing. It's very stylistic with minimal rules. Many writers who considered themselves fiction only have discovered that poetry sparks their creative imaginations in a different, yet very satisfying, way.
Learning Goals
