Class Experience

Welcome back to the world of the Maze Runner! Are you ready for Phase Two?

In this six-week class, learners will read and will discuss the second book in the Maze Runner series, "The Scorch Trials" by James Dashner. This book discussion class is open to both readers who have read the novel before and those who will be reading it for the first time in this class.

**It is recommended that learners complete my class on “The Maze Runner” before enrolling in this one.**

Each week, we will meet in the live classroom to discuss the novel. The first class will focus on an introduction to the book and background information that will help the readers as they study the book. Then, in each class in Weeks 2-6, the class will discuss the assigned chapters from the book in-depth, reviewing important concepts, themes, and literary elements that are used to create meaning in the text. The reading schedule will be available in the Classroom once you enroll.

Class time will be spent discussing important concepts from the assigned chapters along with related information. The teacher will introduce important concepts about the novel to help the learners understand the novel's deeper meaning, and learners will share their own insights and questions. Throughout the class, they will learn the definition of dystopian literature and about the deeper themes, symbols, and other literary concepts in the novel that are important for understanding the underlying message. The class discussion will include how the themes and symbols from the first book, “The Maze Runner,” have carried over.

Learners will be evaluated based on their participation in the class discussion, including showing they have read the assigned chapters and sharing their insights with the class. By the end of the class, they will have a better understanding of "The Scorch Trials" and will have developed the knowledge and skills needed to analyze literature in-depth, including critical reading and critical thinking skills.
