The Science of Worldbuilding

Ages 13-18
Live Group Course
In this 8-week online course, we'll explore fundamental physics, chemistry, and biology--and how these things affect our lives--anthrough the lens of worldbuilding, creating a universe governed by rules we invent. Final presentation to end.

Live video meetings
2x per week, 8 weeks
3-12 learners per class
90 min

What's included

16 live meetings
24 in-class hours
Projects
1-2 hours per week. Every week, we will build a small part of our overall worlds, based on the science and technology concepts we have learned that week.
Assessment
Students will give a final presentation about their built world, which will be graded on a detailed rubric, with scores from 1-3 across several criteria. This rubric will be available from the start of the class for students and families.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
Welcome to the Science of Worldbuilding! This class stems from one simple idea: it's one thing to learn physics and other science concepts about the world we already live in. But what if you had to create a world...how would you build it? Every week will be 2 90 lectures: one overview lecture where I teach on the topics we'll be exploring that week, and one guided work period where I ask students questions to help them build a part of their worlds, based on the topic overview for that week. There are 7 units, with the 8th week being set aside for presentations, which will be graded on a detailed rubric from 1-3 across a variety of criteria; the rubric will be available for download at any time. This class is aligned with the NGSS standards, and I am a certificated high school physics teacher. With those bonafides stated, I look forward to the conversational and idea-driven nature of this class. I am a conversational teacher by nature, and I am so excited to be able to teach a "fun" lens for physics on Outschool. This class is 100% created by me, with all lecture materials created by me or drawn from widely available sources, but I will draw heavily on both classic and modern fantasy and scifi literature for inspiration, as well as academic prior knowledge for the concept lectures. While we will meet virtually live twice a week for 90 minutes per class, I will also be available for one on ones or emails "off hours". I look forward to having your student in class!

Learning Goals

Students will learn through study and re-creation how all areas of our world interact in predictable and repeatable ways
Students will learn through study and practice how many different ways cultures can be created, based on available materials and technologies

8 Units
16 Lessons
over 8 Weeks
Unit 1: Introduction to Worldbuilding and Basic Physics
Lesson 1:
Introduction to Worldbuilding
What is worldbuilding, and why use it to teach science? Basic Concepts in Physics: Overview of forces, energy, and motion, magnetism, and measurement. Understanding units of measure for length, mass, time, and energy.
90 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Foundational Measurement Concepts
Guided Project: Create a simple world model focusing on different gravitational forces and their effects. Think about a world's geography and physical laws. How does gravity affect landscape, weather, and living conditions? What do we measure in?
90 mins online live lesson
Unit 2: Materials and Chemistry
Lesson 3:
The Building Blocks of Worlds: Elements, Compounds, and Materials
Exploration of elements and compounds, the periodic table, and atmospheric sciences. Introduction of concepts of thermal and elastic properties; continue to integrate magnetic properties. Students also consider the atmospheric composition of our world and describe how it affects living conditions.
90 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Materials Creation
Guided Project: Invent and describe atmosphere and materials unique to your world, focusing on their properties and uses in construction and daily life. Create a catalog of materials in your world. What are houses and clothes made of?
90 mins online live lesson

Other Details

Learning Needs
As a neurodivergent individual, all of my class materials and teaching style are inherently understandable for ND learners. I welcome any requests for accommodations.
Parental Guidance
We will be discussing how science and technology affect societal development. Societal development can be tragic to all and especially harmful to marginalized communities.
Pre-Requisites
It is helpful for students to be reading fantasy or scifi, or be nature lovers. This would be helpful for background knowledge. But it's not required.
Supply List
I will supply the rubric for final testing, and any guiding questions will be available as posts.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
I will draw on classic and modern scifi and fantasy literature, as well as widely-available academic physics and general science knowledge.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Washington Teaching Certificate in Science
Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University
I am a certificated high school physics teacher in Washington State, and I've taught high school physics for four years at a college prepatory IB school. I'm also a working engineer; I spent the first decade of my career building planes for Boeing. In addition to these two important credentials, though, I'm also a lifetime literature lover; I've always loved reading about how worlds work and how they influence the character and the story. I switched to tutoring and then to teaching from engineering because I grew to love helping students understand how their worlds work, too.
