Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner Level
What does sleep mean? It is just when animals lie down and close their eyes? In this one-time class, students will discover all the unusual ways animals have adapted to be able to sleep. We will cover a variety of animals; birds, mammals, reptiles, and view the ways they sleep in order to live. Did you know that the way an animal's body is shaped changes it's sleep? Even an animal's diet can determine how they sleep!

The class will begin with a discussion on what students believe sleep is and why animals needs it. We will then discuss the very strange ways that nine different animals sleep and how different their sleep is from ours. Class discussion will be maintained throughout the class with each animal featured. Students will interact with both the teacher and the class and via slides presenting each animal. Class will end with a picture quiz over the animals we talked about during class.

There is no previous experience of knowledge required of students.

Please note, fewer numbers of students may result in a shortened class time.

There will be no refunds issued for a student(s) missing class.

I have been the Coordinator for a hospital-based sleep disorders lab for the last 14 years and am a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. I have worked with thousands of patients over the years with sleep disorders. In fact, part of our testing to become sleep professionals included knowing about the sleep in other animals! Prior to that, I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years and currently homeschool my 15-year-old daughter. I have my Bachelors in Biology and my Masters in Healthcare Administration.
