Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Older students like read-alouds, too! This class involves none of that watered down stuff you see in kiddie books. This is the real deal in all its gory, er, glory. Students will get to sit back, relax, and listen to the teacher as she reads to them the original versions of the tales of the brothers Grimm.

Afterward, we'll briefly discuss together the changes they've heard growing up and their thoughts and feelings about those changes.

Depending on the length of stories and subsequent discussions, we may read several or just one per session.

Students will be encouraged to participate meaningfully, but no one will be put on the spot to do so.

Some of the stories will include:
The Wolf and the Seven Kids
The Hand with the Knife
Nasty Flax Spinning
Death and the Goose Boy
The Singing Bone
The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs
The Castle of Murder
The Devil's Sooty Brother
The Children of Famine
How Some Children Played at Slaughtering
along with all the titles you've come to know and love (but do you really know them at all?)

Study after study has shown that reading aloud to children cultivates within them a deeper love of and appreciation for literature. This doesn't end when children leave kindergarten. Some of the benefits to middle-grade kids being read to include, but are not limited to: improved pronunciation, comprehension, grammar, fluency, expression, and vocabulary; reduced stress; increased reading confidence; and an increase in higher-level thinking. All of this seeps in while the teacher models it for them as they curl up in their jammies and enjoy a good story.

We will follow the book in order. See the sources or materials sections for the edition we'll be using.
