Class Experience

Excitement or disappointment. Joy or anxiety. Our emotions -- whatever they are -- can cause uncomfortable physical responses in our bodies. Children need to know that their feelings are normal AND that there are practical strategies that they can use to help manage those strong emotions so that they feel better and more in control. In this session, children will learn that identifying emotions, controlling them through breathing techniques and creating a plan of positive action can help manage strong feelings. Children will sing a song about having strong feelings and breathing through them, they will read a short story about a rainbow piglet who misses her friends, they will discuss piglet's strategies for helping herself feel better with both me and other students in the session and we will all practice several strategies for identifying and managing strong emotions -- strategies such as positive self-talk and mindful breathing. As a kindergarten teacher of 15 years, I have found that children benefit greatly from developing a sense of efficacy when it comes to emotional self-regulation, and song, story, discussion and practice are the tools to bring this efficacy to life. Learning Goals
Your children will understand the physical responses that strong feelings can produce, that the emotions that we experience -- whether strong or not -- are normal, and that there are strategies that we can employ at any time we identify a strong emotion that feels unmanageable.
