US Grade 2 - 3
This multi-day class is a great introduction to earth sciences and covers several key geographical concepts in relation to plate tectonics and how earthquakes are formed. Each class is supported by on-screen resources, printables and the opportunity to complete hands-on activities. Students are given the opportunity to investigate: • The structure of the Earth • How and why earthquakes happen • How to stay safe during an earthquake The following topics will be covered each week and build a good understanding of the key aspects of the physical geography of earthquakes and their impact on the environment and individuals. Week 1: Beneath our feet – Take a journey through the layers of the Earth! Hands-on activity - making a modelling clay representation of the layers of the Earth Week 2: Moving Earth! Exploring Plate Tectonics and the Ring of Fire! Hands-on activity – How do tectonic plates move? Week 3: Shaking Earth! What are earthquakes and where and why do they happen? Hands-on Activity: Making Observations – Using the Mercalli Scale Week 4: Earthquake Proof! Construction in earthquake zones Hands-on activity: Design an Earthquake Proof Building Week 5: Evacuate! How to prepare for an earthquake Hands on activity: Design a Survival Evacuation Kit All worksheets needed to complete each session will be posted in the classroom the day before class. It is not essential that students use these, but they are designed to increase student participation and engagement in the sessions.
Learning Goals
> To understand what happens at plate boundaries and why tectonic plates are moving
> To explain what causes earthquakes and how they are measured
> To examine ways to mimimise the risks from earthquakes
