Class Experience

Beyoncé is more than a global superstar, she is a cultural force whose career spans music, film, business, and activism. In this 6-week flex course, students will explore her evolution from a Houston teen in Destiny’s Child to an international icon whose work shapes conversations around Black feminism, cultural history, and artistic innovation.

Through a chronological deep dive, students will examine how Beyoncé’s career reflects larger social, political, and historical movements, particularly within the contexts of Black Southern womanhood, feminism, activism, and the music industry. This course will explore:

∙ Destiny’s Child & Early Stardom – How her Southern roots and girl group era shaped her artistry.
∙ Black Feminism in Beyoncé’s Work – From Flawless to Lemonade, how her music amplifies feminist discourse.
∙ Homecoming & HBCU Culture – The significance of Black collegiate traditions in her storytelling.
∙ Activism & Social Movements – Beyoncé’s impact on Black Lives Matter, #SayHerName, and liberation politics.
∙ Entrepreneurship & Industry Power – How she reshaped the business of music with Parkwood Entertainment.
∙ Renaissance & Cowboy Carter – Beyoncé’s shift into dance, country, and the reclamation of Black musical legacies.
∙ Legacy & The Future – How her influence will shape future generations of artists and cultural narratives.

--- CLASS STRUCTURE ---

This is a flex course, meaning students will engage with pre-recorded lessons at their own pace. Each week, students will receive:
∙ A pre-recorded lecture breaking down Beyoncé’s career phase-by-phase
∙ Music videos, performances, and interviews for analysis
∙ Discussion questions to encourage critical thinking
∙ Optional creative projects

--- TEACHING STYLE ---
This course encourages critical thinking, cultural analysis, and historical context-building through engaging, accessible discussions. The instructor takes a conversational, yet academic approach—breaking down complex topics while making them fun, relevant, and thought-provoking for middle and high school students.

This course will use a combination of lecture-style video lessons, multimedia resources, and student engagement through discussion boards and activities. While there are no live meetings, students will have the opportunity to engage in guided analysis, media critique, and optional creative work.

This course is designed for students who are interested in music, media studies, Black history, feminism, and pop culture. Whether you’re a casual Beyoncé fan or a future scholar of pop culture, this course will provide a meaningful exploration of one of the most important artists of our time.

Lesson 1:
The Making of a Cultural Icon: Destiny’s Child & The Rise of Beyoncé (1997–2005)
 How did Beyoncé’s Southern roots & early career set the stage for her cultural impact?

- The formation of Destiny’s Child & how the group shaped Black girlhood in the late ‘90s.
- Key songs: No, No, No, Say My Name, Independent Women Pt. 1.
- Beyoncé’s transition from group member to solo star (Dangerously in Love era). 
Lesson 2:
Solo Stardom & The Beyoncé Brand (2006-2011)
 How did Beyoncé take control of her image and career?

- B’Day era: From pop princess to powerhouse performer (Irreplaceable, Upgrade U).
- Business moves: How she built her brand with fashion, acting, and endorsements.
- The I Am… Sasha Fierce era—alter egos, gender politics, and the making of a superstar. 
Lesson 3:
4, Feminism & The Evolution of Beyoncé (2011–2013)
 When did Beyoncé start embracing activism & feminism in her music?

- The 4 album: A pivot toward artistic control (Run the World, Love on Top).
- 2013: The surprise visual album drop that changed the industry forever.
- Flawless & the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie feature—Beyoncé’s first mainstream feminist statement. 
Lesson 4:
Lemonade, The CMAs & the Politics of Black Womanhood (2016)
 How did Beyoncé turn personal pain into a political statement?

- Formation and the Super Bowl controversy—Beyoncé’s radical Black Power moment.
- The visual storytelling of Lemonade: Southern Gothic, Creole culture, and Black sisterhood.
-Beyonce's Experience at the CMAs
- Themes of rage, healing, and generational trauma in her music videos. 

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This course includes discussions about race, gender, and activism as they relate to Beyoncé’s music and career. Some media content, such as Lemonade and Formation, contains references to historical trauma, social justice movements, and Black liberation. These topics will be presented age-appropriately and with historical context. Additionally, we may discuss themes of feminism, cultural appropriation, and activism, all within the lens of music and media studies. Parents are encouraged to engage in conversations with students about the materials presented. This course will require YouTube.

- Access to Netflix or Disney+ (if students wish to watch Homecoming or Black Is King independently).
