Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Through this class, learners will have the opportunity to practice independent writing in a variety of styles.

- The main objective of the class will be to increase learners’ confidence in their writing abilities.

- Styles of writing that we will review will include but are not limited to expository writing, persuasive writing, narrative stories, poetry, and letter writing.

- I have taught since class since Spring 2020, and it has evolved with learners’ needs. In the current form of the class, learners are presented with several writing prompts based on a theme, and will write typically to 1-2 stories/essays during the writing time we have. Depending on the writing abilities of the learners in the group, we may also include other types of writing skill-building tools like fill-in-the-blank prompts.

- Learners will be able to ask questions during their writing process on content, organization, grammar, and spelling.

- After completing each prompt, learners who wish to will have the opportunity to share out loud.

I love teaching this class because I have seen so many learners grow in their communication skills and self-esteem over the months. I even have some learners who started this class in 2020, and are still enrolled! It gives me such great joy to foster the power of writing in learners, and I can’t wait for your learner to join this writing journey!

Below are notes on Outschool policies
————————————————————

Enrollment Note: Siblings, friends, and other groups of learners in the set age range are welcome to join the class and use one device, but each learner must be individually enrolled per Outschool's policy on multiple learners: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/2186663-enrolling-multiple-learners-in-the-same-class

Additionally, if a learner who falls between the ages of 3-18 wishes to enroll in the class but does not fall between the recommended age range of 6-8 (for example, if the learner is 5 or 9 years old) it is up to the discretion of the instructor to decide if the learner will be allowed to stay enrolled depending on the ages of the rest of the learners in the section and the abilities of that learner. Many parents ask me based on the age range and other qualities of their learner if they think the learner can be successful in the class. From what I have seen, if your learner cannot yet read at least a couple of full sentences on their own, the class may be too hard. If your learner is already writing a chapter book on their own, the class may be too easy. It is also helpful, regardless of age, if your learner is familiar with certain Zoom functions on their own, such as how to mute and unmute and how to open and close the chat box.

While families are welcome to observe their learners taking the class, according to Outschool requests that parents supervising their children stay off-camera as much as possible. No adult may enroll to take the class themselves. In case you need to be on camera to support your child, please message me so I am aware of the situation before class. Please see the item under the Parents FAQ, “Can adults take your classes?” https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/17205-parent-faq

Outschool welcomes learners of all backgrounds, abilities, etc. Please see our Classroom Content Policy: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/753895-class-content-policy

Copying ideas/descriptions for Outschool classes is in violation of Outschool policy.

Refund policy for missed class:
For this ongoing class, if learners are going to miss a class, please let me know before the class starts but sending me a message. If I am notified before the class, I am happy to give a refund for that week. This policy is my personal policy for this class. If I am not informed of an absence before the class, I default to the Outschool refund policy which states that a refund is not guaranteed if a class is missed: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/16379-outschool-s-happiness-guarantee-and-refunds

A final note, just because the question has been asked by many parents before: it is totally okay with me if your child has their lunch/breakfast/snack during class! No permission is needed from me. What matters most is if my learners act in a way that is respectful to themselves, their peers and me, and to our learning time together.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about different styles of writing and will practice extemporaneously writing in response to a given writing prompt.

Supply List
Any means for writing: either paper and pen/pencil, or desktop/laptop/tablet through which the student can write their response to the prompt. Students typically require 3 sheets of paper per class. Having lined paper is optional, but when students have been able to write on lined paper they have been less worried about running out of space.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
