Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
"The Outsiders" is a wonderful coming-of-age novel written in the 1960s. This novel allows for students to question identity and combat stereotypes and biases. We will spend most of our time discussing themes and challenging each other's thinking. As we read, literary analysis will be the skill we focus on, and the end of class project and writing piece will give students the opportunity to show what they have analyzed and how it has made an impact on their thinking.

Class Topics:
There will be two classes per week for 4 weeks which means there are 8 total classes. Each set of chapters will need to be read BEFORE class.

Class Structure:
The majority of the reading will be done outside of class. Class time will be devoted more towards building comprehension and having class discussions.

Teaching Style:
I will present questions and topics to the class each day and provide guidance as they engage in discussion. This class will rely heavily on each individual's participation.
I like to make class fun with review games and vocab games. I enjoy getting to know each student so that we can find text connections to our own lives. This class will also maintain high expectations for student output and allow for critical thinking.

Student Interaction:
In each class, students will interact with me as well as their peers. We will have a short mini-lesson before our discussion and in some classes, we will play games to review chapters and vocabulary.

*No previous experience or knowledge is necessary.
