Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will read three chapters a week on their own time. Each lesson, students will have access to the new video and a corresponding one page worksheet with discussion questions and places for fill-in-the blank answers. I assign a short writing assignment focused around that week's discussion questions and ask the students to share their responses in the classroom. There are also activities like vocabulary words and an optional Kahoot! review quiz to help the student retain as much information as possible.
Assessment
The more questions, comments, and posts that students share in the classroom, the more I can understand their knowledge and comprehension of the topics we are discussing. I respond to all completed worksheets and writing assignments to help foster discussion and clear up any remaining areas of uncertainty.
Grading
Please let me know if you require a grade for this class.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Students will read three chapters a week on their own time. Each lesson, a new video will discuss the pages that the students have previously read. This class does not meet live. The prerecorded sessions will emphasize characters, their motivations, theme, story plausibility, and inferences about what might come next.

Each lesson, students will have access to a video that covers the important elements of the week's reading and a corresponding one page worksheet with discussion questions and places for fill-in-the blank answers. The worksheets will also address/remind the students of some of the important topics from each chapter. Each lesson, I assign a short writing assignment. I also ask students to submit any vocabulary words they didn't recognize or passages they did not understand. The more questions the students ask, the more "discussion" we can have in the classroom after each chapter.

Lesson breakdown:
Students will have access to a video that covers the important elements of the lesson's reading. They will receive a worksheet with discussion questions for each weekly video. There is one weekly writing assignment to complete after the weekly readings. I respond to all completed worksheets and writing assignments to help foster discussion and clear up any remaining areas of uncertainty.

I will post a vocabulary word for the students to use in a sentence that showcases their understanding of the definition. I post comments on students' sentences and offer corrections if the word is used incorrectly.

I also post a link to an optional Kahoot! review quiz that students can further immerse themselves in this world.
Learning Goals
The prerecorded sessions emphasize characters' motivations, theme, and story plausibility. Students will examine their own thoughts through a worksheet, a writing assignment, vocabulary words, and an optional Kahoot! review quiz.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
There is a large amount of violence in this story. Knives and guns are prevalent weapons in this story. Two characters kill another in self-defense when they are attacked. One main character dies after a house fire. Another is shot dead by the police after refusing to put down his weapon. While the story is fairly simple to read, the content may be better geared for an emotionally mature student. I post comments on students' sentences and offer corrections if the word is used incorrectly.
Supply List
Students will need a copy of The Outsiders to read on their own. It can be borrowed from the library or even listened to as an audio book. The students will not need a physical copy of the story in class, although they may find it helpful to have while filling out their worksheets or working on their writing assignment.

I have a Master's Degree in Creative Writing for Children and Young Adults. I was a substitute teacher for three years and currently teach English Composition at a local nursing college. During my time as a substitute teacher, I read, discussed, and talked about The Outsiders multiple times! The first time I read this remarkable book, I was in seventh grade and it opened my mind to a world of different possibilities. Years later, my son read The Outsiders for the first time. I was impressed with the conversation we were able to have about current social issues. I hope to pass on enthusiasm for this book to my students and continue to foster that conversation. My goal is that they will come away with a respect for this story, the author, and her amazing characters.
