I have a bachelor's degree in writing and journalism. I worked as a journalist for over five years and won several awards during my career. My passion has always been literature and writing. As a part of my writing degree, I studied analyzing literature and teaching writing.
Students will need to have a copy of the book, The Outsiders. This book can be "checked out" online through library apps, such as Hoopla and Libby. Students will also need to be able to watch the movie.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The book depicts the drinking of alcohol, smoking, bullying, some violence, murder, and an officer-involved shooting. During discussion, students may draw similar parallels to current issues, but the discussion will be focused around the events of the book, not current events or issues. All discussions will be centered around the reading and the author's intentions in the story and how it relates back to literature.
