In this class we will discuss the location and history of Olympia in the Peloponnese (an area in Greece rich with history and mythology), the original purpose of the games (to train young boys in the military arts, to unify Greece, strengthen Greek culture and pay respects to the Olympian gods) and the activities of the Olympic Games (including what sports were originally popular and what other creative activities like music and singing took place).We will virtually visit Olympia through an Assassins Creed video, watch the 2021 lighting of the Olympic Flame and we will also read the illustrated story of the Corinthian Girl: Athlete of Ancient Olympia. No prior knowledge needed, all are welcome.

My name is Maya and I graduated from the University of Oxford with a geography degree in 2013. Since then I have worked in the humanitarian sector for the British Red Cross and worked as a private tutor around the world. I am grateful that I can share my academic interests on Outschool and meet curious learners from around the world.
