Class Experience
This is a class that is very self-structured and student-led at times. I will give you the tools to speak about the test and to know what is on the test. Above all, I will show you what strategies to employ in order to finish the test given the content and time constraints. (30 minutes) The class will start with drills related to focused areas in math, reading, or writing. (30 minutes)After clarifying questions, we will go over the homework from the previous day (often to finish an SAT...
You will learn what will be covered within the Math portion of the SAT (Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Additional Topics in Math). If you are unsure of what those categories mean in parenthesis, not to fear! You will learn in the class. I will teach you how to more quickly read through the mentally tasking reading comprehension question. I will teach you a "question first" and flipped test design to give you more time to think and less time to read. For the writing portion, we will explore the types of sentences and clauses, grammatical uses of commas, semi-colons, colons, etc... in great detail so that you can narrow your answers quickly and move on to the next question. Time is of the essence with the SAT! It is a test that you can study to and that you have to study to because, with the right training, you will already know what is going to be on the test before you sit for it. I have math drills to complete, a variety of SAT practice tests, speed reading challenges and intensive writing practice. All of this will come in the form of games occasionally to lighten things up. Let's have some fun and let's get you on to the next step in your life!
I have been teaching SAT test prep in Boston Public Schools and as a private tutor for five years now. I have worked with a large variety of students and find that I can connect with a multitude of people to find your learning style, your motivations, and the things that make the test click. I am very comfortable with online tutoring and have an in-home classroom complete with whiteboard and webcam. Many students who have done my SAT Prep classes online have felt that they were actually sitting with me. And the results speak for themselves. My most recent student improved her score from the low 1200's to the mid-1400's with just four months of tutoring. That's a big difference in your future and a lot more opportunity to get where you need to be. That's what I am here for and that is why I love this job!
Homework will be assigned in a flipped classroom manner. Students will be asked to complete portions of practice SAT's so that we can go over problems in the next class. Fellow students can help explain where people might make mistakes to help both the learner and the student-teacher to get the concepts down in a solid fashion for the test. I am here to collaborate with you and provide you with what you need to succeed. If you want extra material, by all means, I have an almost endless supply to give you so that you can be successful. You will get what you put into this class and I will meet you where you need to go!
I will provide all worksheets and materials before class so that you can access them as you are following along. You do not need to purchase anything! Just make sure you have pencil, paper, and a basic calculator.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will have bi-weekly (perhaps more frequently if that is the feedback I receive) SAT practice tests that we can grade ourselves. This can be a portion or the whole test. Again, you get what you put in and this is student-driven. But I have clear markers to show you your own improvement and you may be quite surprised by just how fast you can up that score.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
