Since this is not a live class, it will be important for every student to be an active participant in their readings and discussions within the classroom.

It is also HIGHLY recommended that as students keep a reading response journal of their thoughts and reflections. This provides students with a great way of recording their thoughts as they read, as well as practice writing about their reading. It also enables them to step up their thinking in relation to the book.

Suggested reading response prompts:
•	Make connections between the text and your own experiences. What does the story or characters make you think of? Does it remind you of anyone or anything?
•	Ask questions about the story, the characters, events, or relationships within the story.
•	Write down interesting words, images, phrases, or details. Ask questions about why the author might have chosen them. Tell how they made you feel.
•	Reflect on the events, characters, interactions, perspectives, or any other elements within the story. Be sure to cite specific examples from the text which illustrate your thoughts.
Responses should illustrate the following:
•	Reflection, thoughtfulness and questioning with respect to the story.
•	Connections between personal experiences, other texts, and/or events.
•	Attention to detail regarding the author’s purpose and the character’s perspectives.
Each response should be in complete sentences and cite textual evidence, as appropriate.
For each response, be sure to note the chapter(s) and page numbers the response relates to.
