Class Experience

During book club discussions, students will have the opportunity to engage in discussions related to the book of the month with their peers aimed at deepening understandings while analyzing the characters, plot, setting, theme(s), and/or author’s purpose, among other topics.
Ms. Heather has been a certified teacher for 20 year and a gifted education teacher/specialist for 10 of those years. Teaching and discussing high quality literature is a favorite activity to do with gifted and/or high-level learners.
Students should follow the outlined reading schedule and come to live class prepared with their readings completed.
Reading response journals are also highly recommended to keep
Students will need access to each book. These can be obtained from the public library, as an ebook, or purchased. It is also recommended that students keep a reading response journal to record their reading reflections in. This can simply be a notebook.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Based on the true story of a gorilla who now lives happily in a lowland gorilla habitat at Zoo Atlanta but before that had spent 27 years in a cage in a shopping mall after being captured as a baby in Africa, THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN tells, from the gorilla's standpoint, of life in the circus mall, being gawked at by tourists, and how it all seems so normal. But the arrival of a baby elephant starts to trigger memories, and before long Ivan finds himself making promises he's not sure how he's going to keep.
