The One and Only Ivan is a Newbery-Award-winning novel about a silverback gorilla and a baby elephant who become friends together in captivity. Ivan spent decades (27 years) in an enclosure in a shopping mall before being moved to the Atlanta Zoo. The story is told from Ivan's perspective. It's based on a true events. There are sad moments throughout the book, and Ivan's journey is difficult at times. We will discuss animal rights, welfare, and well-being, especially while in captivity, and covering the impact of human decisions on the animals in our care. I think these are important topics for children to be aware of. We will meet once a week for ten weeks to discuss the novel together. Students will need to read Fifteen (very short) chapters each week prior to our meeting, and be prepared to share their thoughts in an engaging, thought provoking discussion when we meet.
