Class Experience

Join us in 6 live meetings as we gather to discuss and read aloud from Katherine Applegate's "The One and Only Bob," the sequel to the best-selling and beloved novel "The One and Only Ivan." We'll explore the real-life events that tie in with this fictional story, and finally answer the question we've been wondering since "Ivan" ended: "What happened to Bob?"

Class time online will be spent as follows:
2 minute welcome and check in
25 minute teacher read aloud and discussion time as a whole group and/or in breakout teams
3 minute wrap up and homework review.

Students will join in discussions by asking questions and sharing their opinions of the story. We will meet as a whole group for most of the time, but opportunities for breakout pairings are possible to allow for deeper discussions.

Students are not expected to complete any reading before our first meeting, we will be reading portions aloud during each session, and I will upload a reading assignment outline to the classroom to help plan out independent reading times. (No more than 50 pages will be assigned between sessions, roughly 25 pages a night)
Learning Goals
Students will :
> practice note taking
> use text to support opinions
> study author's craft of creating unique voices for characters

Supply List
Required Novel: "The One and Only Ivan" by Katherine Applegate
I suggest a print copy or E-reader instead of, or in addition to an audio copy, as students will be asked to refer to the novel to support ideas.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there, and thanks for stopping by to check out my profile!
As a veteran public school teacher, I had the chance to work with some outstanding students and I saw, first-hand, the importance and "payoff" of creating a reading lifestyle. For many students, finding that book that will "hook" them on reading is still a crazy idea, but I've helped many students do just that.
I believe that each student can enjoy reading and writing - it's just a matter of finding the material and medium that interests them. Students' interest should be valued and helped to grow in new and interesting ways. After all, if you're not interested are you really invested?
I worked for 12 years in a great district before relocating with my family. I've taught Kindergarten, second and sixth grades; in both regular education positions and learning support positions. I earned my B.A. in English from Penn State (WE ARE!), and my M. Ed. in Instructional Leadership from Neumann University.
