Beginner - Intermediate Level
Doesn't English seem a bit - well, weird? This class will delve into the origins of some of our most common, everyday words. We'll finally figure out the reasons for that strange <d> in <Wednesday> or the <r> in <February>, why in the world there is a silent <w> in <two> and why <hamburgers> are called that if they're not made of ham. It's a short and sweet class that will help shed some light on the oddities of English!
Learning Goals
By the end of this class, learners will understand that etymology and word origins play a big role in why words are spelled the way they are, and that inspiration for new words comes from many unexpected places.Learners will also begin to understand that there is a high degree of order and logic to English spellings and that every word is spelled the way it is for a reason.Syllabus

The Days of the Week
We will learn about the origins of the names for the days of the week. 30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
The Months of the Year
We will learn about the origins of the names for the months of the year and the Old English names that they replaced. 30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
The Spelling of Numbers
We will learn more about why the names for numbers are spelled the way they are. 30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Eponyms and Toponyms
We will learn about words that come from the names of people and places. 30 mins online live lesson
