Perform an experiment to create the different layers of the ocean in a jar

Class experience

Students will:
~ Experiment with different liquids and apply the concept of density
~ Learn about the different layers/zones in the ocean
~ Create a model of the different layers/zones in the ocean
~ Collaborate and communicate with peers 
 1 file available upon enrollment
Clear Jar (Can be any size. A smaller jar will use a smaller amount of each liquid.) *Vegetable Oil *Water *Dawn Dish Soap (Preferably blue or another type could be used ) *Pancake Syrup (Corn Syrup could also work) Paper Towel or Towel Pouring Measuring cup Sand or Rocks (Optional for Ocean Floor) Masking Tape (To Label the Jar’s Ocean Layers) Sharpie/Permanent Marker Ocean Zone Sheet (PDF attached on the class site) Pencil/Writing Utensil Funnel (optional) Food Coloring (optional) *The amount of liquid materials depends on the size of your jar
* Students will be pouring various liquids together.  Students will need an area to work at that would allow for spills to be cleaned if they happened.
