Class Experience

The Nutcracker is an iconic ballet performed worldwide every year. The gorgeous dances have been loved by generations for over one hundred years. The music is absolutely magical and this fairy tale awes its audiences. So enchanting!

Young dancers will have the opportunity to listen to the ballet's beautiful music and learn age-appropriate dances, such as the magical "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" in this fun four-day winter break camp. We will work on building ballet technique and learning choreography. In each day of the camp, we will focus on a different famous dance. First, we will do a warm up to stretch our bodies and gain more flexibility. Dancers will watch a video clip of a live ballet performance. We will work on dance movements and techniques needed to complete the dance. Then we will work on the choreography for the day's dance routine. Dancers are encouraged to dress up in their favorite dress, tutu, or soft pants.

Nutcracker dances:
Day 1: "Waltz of the Flowers"
Day 2: "Waltz of the Snowflakes"
Day 3: "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"
Day 4: "Dance of the Reed Flutes"

Some experience in ballet and its terminology will be very helpful. This camp is open to any dancer who has taken my dance classes through Outschool (beginner or intermediate levels) or who has some previous experience in another ballet class/studio. Since winter breaks vary in different locations, send me a message if you want a different camp time than what is listed. If you have any questions, please send me a message and I will be very happy to answer.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to dance in a safe way and improve their techniques. They will gain flexibility, strength, and improve their memory and focus as they learn choreography.

Parental Guidance
If possible, please provide a chair or something sturdy at an appropriate length for the height of your child for balancing. Please make sure your child takes the class in an open area where they will not accidentally kick something or put themselves in danger. Ideally, the space would not be slippery, but if it is a slippery surface, it is recommended to use non-stick socks or shoes. If your child already has ballet shoes, it is recommended they use them (although not required). Parents and guardians should remain nearby to assist and prevent accidents. Children are free to dress up, but please make sure the attire is loosely fitting. Having a water bottle nearby is ideal. If class is taken during warmer months, it is ideal to have an air conditioner or fan running to prevent overheating.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello current friends and future friends!
Welcome to Ms. Sarah's virtual classes! I am super excited to share my passions including dance, world travel, music, writing, theater, and more with your children! My typical classes are high energy and intended to build skills, increase confidence, and have fun.
I graduated with honors with a double major in Psychology and Communications with a minor in Music from The City University of New York--Hunter College. I studied in Argentina at La Universidad de Mar del Plata and I hold a TESOL Certificate from Arizona State University.

My experience includes both in-school and online teaching, particularly as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher over the last four years and as a dance teacher for about ten years. As an ESL teacher, have worked with thousands of foreign learners, guiding them to high achievement with their English skills. I've created and utilized many tools and techniques to increase student output and improve their written, spoken, and reading skills. I also work as a mentor for new online ESL teachers. I was also who helped build the English skills of students at a local school in Livingstone, Zambia in Africa. I have taught and can speak both Spanish and Hebrew as well.

I am a trained dancer with experience holding classes in ballet, jazz, contemporary, theater, and hip hop. I studied and trained my whole life as a dancer. I danced with companies and in shows in New York City. I have also taught dance at schools in New York City, abroad in other countries. I hold both personal and virtual dance and movement classes with the company I created in my area. I ran the dance department at a day rehabilitation facility for special needs adults and at a school for the blind. What is my philosophy behind teaching dance? Dance is an art form. It is a creation of movement used to tell a story. My classes are constructed with the aim of building the student's confidence and providing a safe space for their own exploration. Classes are meant to be challenging, but very fun!

Fun Fact: Upon graduating from college, my big goal was to hit "30 before 30!" I have traveled the world, meeting so many different people along the way, as I made it my mission to see 30 countries. I am looking forward to meeting all of my future friends who live around the USA and around the world.

I am so excited to see you soon in my classroom!
