The Northern Lights: Light up Your Day With This Painting Project
What are the Northern Lights? How do they dance and change color? Join me to learn more about the science and colors of the Northern Lights while we paint our own picture in the style of Northern Artist Ted Harrison.

Class Experience
This single-course offering will begin with a brief overview of the Northern Lights. Learners will learn the conditions that create the Northern Lights, why they are the colors they are, and what makes them “dance”. Learners will learn about Northern artist Ted Harrison using a brief power point and lecture. We will look at two of Ted Harrison’s most famous children’s books which feature his artwork. As a class we will answer the question, “What inspired Ted Harrison?” and then ask...
Students create a landscape picture of the Northern Lights in the style of artist Ted Harrison. Students know sources of ideas such as observations, feelings, and books, and will understand that artists can be influenced by culture and place. Students gain basic facts of the Northern Lights.
No homework for this class but you might find your learner wanting to paint more Ted Harrison inspired pictures! Learners are invited to create at their own pace. Needing time to finish the painting after class is possible.
Paint set – tempera, craft, or acrylics (please use any type of paint you may have. If you are buying paints a simple, kid's paint set will work well). Paint brush – 3/8” or ½” flat preferred but any paintbrush will work. Paper – try to find paper thicker than printer paper if you can, such as card stock or watercolor paper. It should not be shiny and must be white. Cup and water for rinsing brush. Small sponge for blotting brush. Black sharpie – medium or wide tip. Pencil. Newspaper or piece of fabric (drop cloth) to protect table surface. Painting shirt/t-shirt to protect clothes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No formal assessment for this class.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
All materials and resources are suited to and appropriate for elementary aged students. Parents may want to be present to assist with painting project depending on needs/wants of learner.
