Do you ever wonder what your dog does at night? Or maybe your cat, or your mom, or your brother? In this 6-week writing class, students will listen to the hilarious story "The Night I Followed the Dog", and then brainstorm someone or something they would want to follow. Over the course of six weeks, we will work together to decide on a character to follow, write a plan for our writing, and draft each section of the story. Finally, students will be given the opportunity to revise and edit their writing. Students will see each step modeled in class, and be given guidance and feedback throughout each lesson. During the last week of class, students will be invited to read their stories aloud in class. I can't wait to hear who our writers will follow! Our schedule will be as follows: Week 1: Read "The Night I Followed the Dog," brainstorm, and write a plan with the format "Beginning - Middle - Middle - End" Week 2: Write an exciting Beginning that hooks our readers Week 3: Write the first middle (main idea) of our story Week 4: Write the second middle (main idea) of our story Week 5: Write an ending and revise our writing Week 6: Write a final draft and publish writing by sharing with others. By the end of this course, students will have learned to develop creative writing ideas, write a plan for writing, and write a well-organized story. They will have a chance to share their work with others and talk about writing with other students. This will be a growing experience for everyone!

Hello! My name is Jessica McGinn and I am so excited to meet your child! I graduated in 2008 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, and I hold an Elementary Ed teaching certificate in the state of Florida. I have 10 years of experience as a classroom teacher, where I have taught first through fourth grade. I have also taught English online to children age 4 to 14! I am passionate about teaching and about learning, and I especially love to teach reading!
I believe that all children CAN love to read. Some just haven’t found the right book yet! I hope to inspire children to want to read more, all while teaching them important reading comprehension and writing skills.
I live in sunny Florida with my husband, my two daughters, Ella and Ruthie and our dog, Buddy.
