Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as they read and analyze American literature written over a period of 99 years. They will also learn to think deeply about what they read so that they can better understand themselves and the world in which they live, which improves metacognitive skills and learning. Students will learn to discuss literature analytically, increasing their communication skills. Students will become a part of an online community bound together by books. Most importantly, they will learn to love literature and become life-long readers.
Mrs. Lemons has a B.A. in English/Literature and an M.Ed in Education Administration. She has a teaching and principal's license and is endorsed to teach English and History. She has many years of experience teaching in public and private schools at every level, including undergraduate and graduate students at Colorado Christian University seeking their teaching licenses. She is a teacher of teachers.

If we encounter sensitive topics and issues, I fall back on my English literature education degree, teacher training, and years of English teaching experience. We analyze the historical context in which novels were written, the author's background and worldview, and the story's time period. Discussion is focused on what the characters believe, what the author believed, and what beliefs were central to literary periods of time, such as the romantics or even the dark romantics. Students' varied ideas and opinions are respected.
Students will read one novel each week.
Please look at the schedule of novels in the listing. Students will need to borrow or buy each book.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Although the reading level of Newbery novels is often appropriate for today's middle school and high school learners, the topics, themes, and content of the Newbery books are written for kids aged 14 and below. To read about each book, visit or
