Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
In this one time class students will explore the weird and wonderful skunk cabbage plant. We will use real images of skunk cabbage blooms, a poem about the unique plant, and a coloring sheet to create, discuss, label, and learn about how this special flower is one of the first blooms for pollinators in the late winter/early spring. Skunk cabbage's interesting smell and quirky appearance will give the learner an exciting and engaging look into pollination and the importance of plant survival and biodiversity.

Authentic learning topics and vocabulary that will be discussed:
*pollination/pollinator - the important relationship between the pollinator and the plant.
*biodiversity - the role of unique plant species and plant survival.
*thermogenesis/thermoregulation- the plants ability to melt snow and create its own heat.
*parts of the plant - we will discuss and label the parts of the skunk cabbage blooms using the provided coloring sheet.

Social and emotional learning and awareness is at the heart of my teaching. Coloring and creating while discussing the science surrounding skunk cabbage, will allow the child to gain a deeper understanding of the material. Adding poetry and imagery into the experience will allow for an even wider connection across subjects.

This is a beginner class. Questions, wonder, and curiosity are always welcomed.

Learning Goals
