US Grade 5 - 7
Beginner Level
Whether students are new to solving for a variable or need a refresher, this class walks them through the process using intuitive problem-solving methods. Students will discover multiple ways of approaching problems involving variables and that the method needs to fit the problem instead of attempting a one-size-fits-all approach. There will be four mysteries that students will solve. 1. The mystery of splat (Introducing variables) 2. The mystery of the rectangles (Solving for a variable) 3. The mystery of the Stolen Money (Multiple term equations) 4. The mystery of the Mobile (Simplifying complex expressions and equations)
Learning Goals
Students will be able to solve for a variable using a method appropriate for the equation.
Syllabus
6 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
The Mystery of the Splat
In this lesson students will discover intuitive ways for determining an unknown. This lesson will involve one step equations with whole numbers and fractions.
7 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
The Mystery of the Splat
In this lesson students will discover that a variable has to maintain its identity in an equation. This lesson will involve two step equations with whole numbers and fractions.
7 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
The Mystery of the Rectangle
In this lesson, students will explore the idea of equivalency in an equation by using rectangles of equal size. This lesson will use only positive whole numbers.
6 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
The Mystery of the Stolen Money
In this lesson, students will explore the idea of a variable, varying in its value depending on the context, constraints, and information provided.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Missouri Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Mathematics from Drury University
I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think
I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.
