Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
Beginner Level
Whether students are new to solving for a variable or need a refresher, this class walks them through the process using intuitive problem-solving methods. Students will discover multiple ways of approaching problems involving variables and that the method needs to fit the problem instead of attempting a one-size-fits-all approach.

There will be four mysteries that students will solve.

1. The mystery of splat (Introducing variables)
2. The mystery of the rectangles (Solving for a variable)
3. The mystery of the Stolen Money (Multiple term equations)
4. The mystery of the Mobile (Simplifying complex expressions and equations)
Learning Goals
Students will be able to solve for a variable using a method appropriate for the equation.

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
