In this introduction to variables course, students become detectives who set out to solve some puzzles and mysteries. Each puzzle and mystery is focused on a single skill related to solving equations with variables. 

In this lesson students will discover intuitive ways for determining an unknown. This lesson will involve one step equations with whole numbers and fractions. 

The Mystery of the Splat 

In this lesson students will discover that a variable has to maintain its identity in an equation. This lesson will involve two step equations with whole numbers and fractions. 

In this lesson, students will explore the idea of equivalency in an equation by using rectangles of equal size. This lesson will use only positive whole numbers. 

The Mystery of the Rectangle 

In this lesson, students will explore the idea of a variable, varying in its value depending on the context, constraints, and information provided. 

The Mystery of the Stolen Money 

In this lesson students will explore writing an expression to represent a word problem. 

The Mystery of the Pirates Treasure

In this lesson students will explore the idea of simplifying equations and expressions in order to fluently solve problems.
