Class Experience

The goal of this class is to use these wonderful stories to excite the students about reading while also teaching language arts, encouraging good reading comprehension, public speaking, building confidence and having fun learning together.

Learners will have short weekly assignments to go with their readings focusing on the vocabulary they will encounter in their readings that week. There are anywhere from 20-30 chapters in each book and over the course of a week, the goal is to read 3-5 chapters totaling approximately 55-80 pages a week. This may not seem like a lot but many students are back in school and will have other homework to complete. My goal is not to overwhelm the student, but rather to keep them engaged, interested and excited so much so that they don't even realize how much learning is happening!
The book series will be required for the class and can be purchased as separate books, as a series or downloaded as a digital book through various popular outlets.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will not give actual grades. Students will each have a different experience in a discussion based class. Every student will have different strengths and weaknesses. My hope is for each student to have improved on a weakness, found a new way to look at something or even just learned the meanings of words they have never used before.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Parents may want to be aware that the children in the story are all 12 and under, are all orphans for different reasons and that ethical dilemmas where a character has to choose between right and wrong or what kind of friend they want to be will come up in these stories. If these are things you think your child might be sensitive to, please don't hesitate to ask me any questions.
