The Music of Hamilton: How the Broadway Show Story Is Told Through Music

Are you a fan of Hamilton? Prerequisite: Listening to and/or watching Hamilton. A decent knowledge of the show is best.

One of the many layers of the brilliance of Hamilton is the use of music. In this class, we will dive into how music was used to shape the story, including the history of rap and hip-hop, the use of themes / leitmotif, and tonal scales and structures. We will accomplish this through group discussion of the music, and visual/audio presentations throughout the hour.

And we will have at least one sing-along before class has finished!

Cameras must be on for the entirety of the class.

All learners must be enrolled students; if two learners are sharing a device, both learners must be enrolled per Outschool policies.

SEG does not do last minute transfers, after the cancellation period has expired.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Prerequisite: Listening to and/or watching Hamilton. A decent knowledge of the show is best. This class is about the music of Hamilton; specifically: themes/leitmotifs and the rap/hip-hop influences in the show. There are some adult themes in the rap/hip-hop influences, but nothing moreso than there is in the show Hamilton itself. As a reminder, Hamilton has adult themes such as shooting/guns & death, drugs & alcohol use, adultery, sex, revolution, and cuss words. The teacher will strive to keep any of the items above to a minimum in what will be discussed, but some are unavoidable.
