Join me on a journey through the world of Modernism, an era that revolutionized art, literature, and society. Explore the groundbreaking ideas, unconventional styles, and bold experiments that defined this remarkable period. In this class, you will: -Immerse yourself in the works of influential Modernist pioneers such as Picasso, Joyce, and Woolf. -Analyze the cultural and historical context that shaped Modernist thought. -Engage in lively discussions and critical thinking exercises. -Develop a deeper understanding of the impact of Modernism on contemporary art and literature. -Whether you're an art enthusiast, a literature buff, or simply curious about one of the most dynamic periods in human history, this class is for you. Modernism is a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement of the 20th century exploring the limits of humanity and traditional forms. This course will explore the origins and results of this movement that developed in reaction to the changing century and World War 1. In class, we will explore the origins and concerns of this movement by looking at primary documents. Each week we will explore the art, music, and literature of Modernism to investigate the major themes, styles, and concerns of this time period. We will look at artists and philosophers such as e e cummings, TS Eliot, Picasso, Joyce, and Nietzsche, among others. Students will build textual, visual, and musical analysis skills through this exploration and discussion. Optional writing assignments will be provided each week for students who want individualized feedback. See also my related world literature courses.
