Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest athlete of all time. While many people are familiar with his extreme competitiveness and strong desire to win, they are likely less familiar with the rest of his mindset. In this class, we will be exploring Jordan's psychology in a number of ways. First, we will dig deeper into his competitiveness and views towards effort and improvement. From there, we'll explore Jordan's motivation and what drove him to succeed. Eventually we'll get to concepts such as anchor breathing and practice structure. Throughout the class, interviews, video clips, and other mediums will be utilized to explore these concepts.
Learning Goals
Students will develop their own mental skills by learning psychological skills from one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings,
I'm Dr. Paul Ashbrook, a Certified Mental Performance Coach and Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology. Over the last 10 years, I have taught both undergraduate and graduate Sport and Performance Psychology classes at National University. In addition to that, I have consulted with a wide range of elite performers, including athletes, special operations forces, as well as educators. My background is competitive golf, so much of my professional career has been spent working with elite junior and Division I players. However, I am also a published researcher, who has explored the efficacy of individualized mental skills training, the mental skills that differentiate elite performance at the Division I level, as well as best practices for tele-consulting.
As an instructor, my goal is to help each student become the best of which they are capable. To do this, I believe that it is important to strive to improve a little bit every day. If we can do that, our performance compounds, allowing us to experience high levels of growth and success. Furthermore, since every student is different, I try to individually tailor content to meet each student's unique needs.
