Class Experience

Do you like stories about finding buried treasure? If so, The Mildenhall Treasure is for you! In 1942, farmer Gordon Butcher plowed up a hoard of ancient Roman silverware on a farm in eastern England. Where did it go? Four years later, acclaimed children’s author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach) wrote the true story about the hoard’s discovery, how the discovery was finally made public, given to the British Museum, and of the reward for the finders and “keepers.” For centuries, the Romans and Vikings buried hoards of treasure in English soil. In this class we’ll study why people buried treasure hoards. We’ll also study the British rules about reporting treasure troves (Two Englishmen were jailed last year for selling Viking coins on the black market!). The book we’ll read, Roald Dahl’s The Mildenhall Treasure is a verbal and visual delight, with illustrations by Ralph Steadman. Come join us as we explore this thrilling discovery!

Hello Friends,

I am a former high school Latin teacher with recent experience in teaching Classical Mythology to elementary school students, as well as English to high school students. I love the interplay between the ancient world and later languages, literature, and works of art. My classes focus on the influence of the classical world on later cultures and language studies. I hold an M.A. in Classics from the University of Wisconsin, an M.Ed. from Ashland (Ohio) University, and taught Latin for 11 years. I love seeing students get excited about learning and hope they will become curious lifelong learners. I am married and have two daughters, 16 and 12, as well as a friendly black lab named Piper. I hope to see you all in class!

With Kind Regards, Steve
