Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
McDonald's has been involved in many lawsuits regarding their stores and products. They've even had several lawsuits regarding their french fries! The first lawsuit was regarding the fact that the fast-food giant used beef seasoning in their fries. The other notorious fry-related lawsuits are regarding the fact that the fries are not dairy or gluten-free.

Now, you may be asking yourself, "How are people even able to sue for that?" This is not a criminal law issue or a typical civil law issue like negligence or products liability. So what is the legal basis of these lawsuits? Interestingly, they are based in contract law.

In this class we will discuss the details of these lawsuits in order to illustrate the relevant topics in contract law. This class will be perfect both for those that want to be future lawyers and those that don't. This topic will be an interesting, modern, and relevant case study to study contract law (whereas in law school, students often study the same cases, some dating back to the 1800s!) and also a way to learn about something that affects us all as consumers -- breach of warranties.

This will be a discussion-based class. Students will be given a brief summary of the case details and then the contract law topics will be explained. Students will then be asked to discuss their thoughts on the issues and particularly to discuss if McDonald's should win/lose the lawsuit, what are the responsibilities of producers and consumers, and if they would have sued in these cases.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about breach of warranties and other related topics. They will be able to apply their knowledge to relevant cases and real-world events. This class will be beneficial to all students, as this topic should be explored by anyone that is a--or will be--a consumer.
