Students will improve their reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as they read and discuss the novel. They will socialize with classmates about what they are reading.
I have been teaching middle school Reading and Language Arts for more than 19 years. I specialize in reading skills/strategies, teaching writing, and working with students at their own individual levels. I have worked almost exclusively with reluctant readers and writers!
Students will need a copy of the novel we will be discussing during class. They will also need a pencil and paper to use during class. The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson
The main characters are kidnapped by men who are described as "slave-traders." They are frequently in mild danger as the story progresses. There are several "battles" involving guns and crossbows, and which briefly mention blood. There is nothing very graphic or gory. The main characters hold hands once, and the boy kisses the girl on the cheek toward the end of the story.
