Description

Class Experience

Students will improve their reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary as they read and complete challenges/activities related to the novel. They will socialize and interact with classmates about what they are reading in the virtual classroom.
I have been teaching middle school Reading and Language Arts for more than 18 years. I specialize in reading and vocabulary skills/strategies, teaching writing, and working with students at their own individual levels.
Participation in the classroom is expected during/after each session. I will also be posting encouragement and tips throughout the week, and learners can interact with each other in the classroom as they share their work and complete challenges.

Learners should read these chapters BEFORE watching the video tutorial each week.
Week 1: Read chapters 1-2
Week 2: Read chapters 3-5
Week 3: Read chapters 6-8
Week 4: Read chapters 9-12
Week 5: Read chapters 13-15
Week 6: Read chapters 16-17
Week 7: Read chapters 18-19
Week 8: Read chapters 20-23
Students will need a copy of the novel we will be discussing during class. They will also need a pencil and paper to use during class. The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The main characters are kidnapped by men who are described as "slave-traders." They are frequently in mild danger as the story progresses. There are several "battles" involving guns and crossbows, and which briefly mention blood. There is nothing very graphic or gory. The main characters hold hands once, and the boy kisses the girl on the cheek toward the end of the story.

We will use YouTube, Flipgrid and Nearpod throughout the course. All sites will be accessible directly through the Outschool classroom.
For Nearpod, learners will be given a code each week to access the lesson, and they will not need an individual account.
Flipgrid will require a student account, and learners will be given a class code on the first day of class to connect to our group board. Please sign up at https://info.flip.com/, so your learner will be ready to begin. It's a very easy process, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have!
Weekly video tutorials are housed on YouTube and will be linked in the classroom. Learners may also access the internet/YouTube to help with class challenges.
