I am a Social Studies teacher, I have travelled to Egypt and have learned about and taught Ancient Egyptian History. Ancient Egyptian religion is complex, and the gods were central to both daily life and afterlife beliefs. Understanding these deities involves multiple viewpoints: from the ancient Egyptians themselves, scholars across time, and modern interpretations. This course will present these perspectives to provide a well-rounded view of Egypt’s pantheon of gods.

Ancient Egyptian Perspective: For Egyptians, gods were seen as protectors and enforcers of Ma'at (order and balance). The gods were essential in maintaining harmony between the gods and humans, as well as in sustaining cosmic order.

Modern Egyptological Perspective: Scholars emphasize the importance of understanding how Egyptians viewed gods through their rituals, temples, and daily prayers. This is informed by archaeological discoveries and the study of texts like the Pyramid Texts and the Book of the Dead.

Contemporary Perspective: Some modern scholars focus on how Egyptian deities influenced the development of religious practices in other cultures, including Greek and Roman polytheism and even Abrahamic religions. Egypt’s influence can be seen in religious symbolism, iconography, and mythological structures.
