The language of music begins with a discovery of how sounds can change. There is no need for a separate musical instrument for these classes, the only instrument required is your voice! With the Loving guidance of Mrs. H, a healthy approach to singing and an introduction to the changing sounds in music is explored through storytelling, singing, movement, art, and more! A gentle and holistic approach to music literacy, The Magical Language of Music courses are not one in which ideas are committed to memory... they are learned by Heart. In this session, children will be introduced to the ever important concept of beat! Mrs. H will share a short story that embodies this concept, followed by activities that will allow the students to experience in their bodies and voices the idea of a musical beat. Inspired by blending the Kodály approach to music education and the Waldorf approach to literacy, this holistic method provides students with an enjoyable experience that allows them to conceptualize this important concept that helps to lay the foundation for musical literacy.
Learning Goals
Along with an age appropriate exploration of their voice as an instrument, students will begin to lay the foundation for music literacy through a holistic and creative exploration of musical sounds. Each session will focus on one particular foundational musical concept for the entire session. This gives students the opportunity to fully experience one idea before moving on to another. In Session Six we will explore the idea of a steady musical beat, and in the other sessions of The Magical Language of Music: Foundations of Music, the following ideas are explored:
Session One
• High and Low
Session Two
• Fast and Slow
Session Three
• Loud and Soft
Session Four
• Smooth and Jerky
Session Five
• Short and Long

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching music to children and adults alike for a very long time. Somewhere along the way, many have lost the belief that everyday people are capable of beautiful music-making with each other. But music is not solely a performance art... it is a form of communication in which humans have been participating for thousands of years. Along with establishing a joyful foundation in music literacy for children, it is my hope that these classes will encourage children to share their love of music-making with each other, and even the grown-ups in their lives. Let us sing together!
