Description
Class Experience
We discuss the books at length so make sure your child has read and has copies of the books, so we don't give away any plot lines or spoilers. I will gently guide the discussion on different book topics such as: plot, character attributes and development, themes, genre types, literary devices and others. This will be a time for students to share their love of reading. We will leave most time open for discussion and learn different book elements around that discussion. I have found that...
Students will learn the following: --How to share and relate to fellow students. --Elements of a novel such as (but not limited to) theme, characters, foreshadowing, plot, book genres, and symbolism. --How to relate the themes of great novels to their lives.
I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching. I have always love reading and teaching book studies to students of all ages. I have taught English, Spanish, ESL and religion classes to students ages 7-18 in public school and private settings. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to: The Old Man and the Sea, Lord of the Flies, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer and others. I am currently teaching a Keeper of the Lost Cities book club on Outschool for ages 10-14. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
There will be a small amount of homework for each class meeting.
The students should have copies of the Lunar Chronicles to discuss.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be no assessment unless requested by the parent.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This book has some violence that some learners may find disturbing. Characters kiss during different scenes in the book. I would definitely read reviews of the book on Common Sense Media to make sure you are comfortable with your child reading these novels.
The only materials we will use will be the Lunar Chronicles books and some discussion of the original fairy tales including the Grimm Brothers.
